Science Communication for Planetary Health
An initiative to engage science communication in Indonesia, with a focus on planetary health.
Building science journalism is pivotal to tackling planetary health.
This collaborative initiative, led by the University of Sydney and Universitas Airlangga in partnership with the Society of Indonesian Science Journalists (SISJ), aims to strengthen effective science communication in Indonesia, particularly around planetary health. Through a series of activities, including a dedicated workshop in Surabaya and a symposium held in Sydney, the program gathered science journalists, bioscientists, and communication experts to develop guidelines on best practices in collaborative science reporting. Key themes included open data, multimedia storytelling techniques, and enhancing journalist-scientist collaborations. Early-career journalists and communicators were specifically trained to create engaging narratives tailored to diverse Indonesian audiences, ultimately supporting stronger public education, policy discussions, and community responses to environmental and health challenges.
“By strengthening communication channels and skills, we can advance scientific trust and empower communities to respond effectively to planetary health challenges.”
